Ivan Sutherland

Ivan Sutherland created a computer program that created graphic images onto a display screen by using a hand-held object. This program was called Sketchpad and was the first computer program the allowed images to be created directly onto a display screen. Additionally, he has written over 49 publications. He holds 12 patents. He has earned many awards for his work including the Kyoto Prize, Smithsonian Computer World Award, and the First Zworykin Award.

Academic Events: Ivan Sutherland earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology , and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

His accomplishments impacted computer science because his program was the start of computer graphics and he made many visionary contributions.

Katherine Johnson

August 26, 1918—February 24, 2020

Katherine Johnson is mainly known for plotting the path for Alan Shepard's 1961 journey to space. She was an indispensable asset for NASA in many other projects such as the Apollo 11 trip, Apollo 13’s return, space shuttle program, and Earth Resources Satellite, as well. In 2015 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work.

Academic Events: Katherine Johnson excelled in academics and finished highschool early at the age of fifteen. She went on to earn a PhD in mathematics at West Virginia State College and graduate with highest honors.

Her accomplishments impacted computer science because without her, NASA would not have advanced so quickly in many fields, including using electronic computers for calculations. Johnson would always be consulted to check the calculations of computers once they were integrated into the institution.

Hedy Lamarr

November 9, 1914- January 19, 2000

In 2014, Hedy Lamarr pioneered frequency hopping technology, which then paved the way for innovations such as WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and other wireless communication systems. This achievement earned her a spot in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Alongside her groundbreaking technological contributions, Lamarr also made significant strides in the film industry by producing her own movies, including titles like The Strange Woman, Dishonored Lady, and The Loves of Three Queens.

Academic Events: Hedy Lamarr received private tutoring starting from the age of four. At the age of ten, Lamarr had mastered four languages, demonstrated proficiency in playing the piano, and exhibited skillful dancing abilities.

Her accomplishments impacted computer science because she proved that you didn't need to study technology in order to make significant technological advancements.
